What is a Kundali?

A Kundali (Janam Kundali or birth chart) is a diagram showing the exact positions of the nine planets at the precise moment and location you were born. It uses the sidereal zodiac — actual planetary positions against fixed stars as seen from Earth.

A Vedic Kundali has 12 divisions called houses. Each house corresponds to an area of life. Each planet occupies a house and a sign. Your Kundali is not your fate — it maps the energies and themes you came into this life to work with.

Step 1 — Find Your Lagna (Ascendant)

The Lagna — also called Ascendant or Rising Sign — is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your exact birth moment. It is the most important single point in your Kundali.

In the North Indian chart, the topmost diamond box is always the 1st house (Lagna). The sign there is your Lagna sign. Your Lagna determines the entire structure of your chart — two people born the same day but different times will have different Lagnas and completely different charts.
