Navaratri 2026 — Key Dates at a Glance
Shardiya Navaratri 2026 begins: Monday, 22 September 2026 (Pratipada) Navaratri ends: Tuesday, 30 September 2026 (Navami) Vijaya Dashami / Dussehra: Wednesday, 1 October 2026 Navaratri begins the very day after Pitru Paksha ends on Mahalaya Amavasya (21 September). This transition — from ancestor reverence to Devi celebration — is one of the most spiritually charged moments of the Hindu calendar year.
What is Navaratri?
Navaratri means 'nine nights' — nava (nine) and ratri (night). It is celebrated four times a year, but the most significant is Shardiya Navaratri, the autumn festival in September-October that marks the victory of the divine feminine over the demonic.
Each of the nine nights honours one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga, collectively called Navadurga. Different regions celebrate differently: Bengal observes elaborate Durga Puja pandals; Gujarat celebrates with Garba and Dandiya Raas; North India stages Ram Leela performances culminating in the burning of Ravana's effigy on Dussehra.

How to Observe Navaratri — Puja Rituals
Setting up the altar: Place a Durga image or idol on a clean altar. Install a Kalash — a copper pot filled with water, mango leaves, and a coconut — representing the Goddess. Light an Akhand Jyot (continuous flame) if possible, kept burning for all nine days.
Daily puja: Offer flowers, kumkum, sindoor, incense, camphor, and seasonal fruit each morning. Chant the Durga Saptashati (700 verses) or at minimum the Durga Chalisa daily. Evening Aarti with bells and camphor lamp.
Kanya Puja on Ashtami (29 September): Invite nine young girls aged 2-10. Wash their feet, apply alta, offer a complete meal of puri, chana, and halwa, and present a small gift. This is considered one of the most powerful acts of Navaratri — the girls are treated as living manifestations of the nine Devis.
Havan on Navami (30 September): A sacred fire ritual completing the nine-day observance and ensuring all prayers are fully offered and received.
Navaratri Fasting Rules
Strict fast: Water, milk, fruits, and nuts only — no grains, pulses, or non-vegetarian food.
Saatvik fast (most common): Permitted foods include sabudana (sago), kuttu (buckwheat flour), singhare ka atta (water chestnut flour), rajgira (amaranth), and all fruits. Use sendha namak (rock salt) instead of regular salt. No onion or garlic throughout Navaratri.
Partial fast: Fast only on Pratipada (22 Sept) and Navami (30 Sept), keeping a sattvic vegetarian diet on other days.
Breaking the fast: Traditionally broken on Navami (30 September) after Kanya Puja and the completion of morning puja rituals.
What is universally avoided: Non-vegetarian food, alcohol, onion, garlic, regular salt, and harsh speech. The entire Navaratri period is one of sattvic living — thoughts, words, and actions aligned with dharma.
Astrological Significance of Navaratri 2026
Navaratri falls when the Sun transits into Libra (Tula Rashi) — the sign of its debilitation. This is profound: the Goddess is invoked precisely when solar-masculine energy is at its most humble. The divine feminine rises to fill the space the weakened Sun creates.
In 2026, Jupiter is exalted in Cancer throughout Navaratri, adding exceptional auspiciousness. An exalted Jupiter during Navaratri is a rare combination that amplifies the potency of every mantra, every act of charity, and every moment of devotion performed during these nine days.
The nine Navadurga forms also correspond to the nine planets of Vedic astrology — worshipping each Devi on her day harmonises the planetary energy of that planet in your birth chart. This makes Navaratri one of the most powerful astrological remedy periods of the entire year.
