What Dev Uthani Ekadashi means
Dev Uthani (also Prabodhini or Devotthana) Ekadashi falls on the Shukla Ekadashi of Kartik. It marks the day Lord Vishnu is believed to wake from his four-month sleep (Chaturmas), which began on Devshayani Ekadashi. Devotees fast, worship Vishnu and keep a night vigil. Marriages and other auspicious events are traditionally resumed after this day.
Date and tithi in 2026
Ekadashi begins at 7:16 AM on 20 November and ends at 6:31 AM on 21 November. It covers almost all of 20 November, so the main fast is on Friday, 20 November. Some Vaishnava traditions follow a different sunrise rule and may observe the fast on 21 November, so confirm with your own sampradaya or local pandit.
Parana (breaking the fast)
Parana is done on Dwadashi, the day after the fast. Dwadashi begins at 6:31 AM on 21 November, but the first quarter of Dwadashi (Hari Vasara) is avoided for breaking the fast. In New Delhi that ends at about 12:07 PM, so Parana is after that time on 21 November, within Dwadashi, which lasts until 4:56 AM on 22 November.
Tulsi Vivah
Tulsi Vivah is the ceremonial marriage of the Tulsi plant to Vishnu in the form of Shaligram or Krishna. It can be performed from Dev Uthani Ekadashi onward, and many families do it in the evening of Dwadashi, so 21 November after sunset (5:25 PM in New Delhi) is the usual day this year. Others hold it on Kartik Purnima, 24 November.
- Decorate the Tulsi plant like a bride with a red cloth (chunari), bangles and flowers, and place a Shaligram or a Krishna idol beside it.
- Light a lamp and offer fruit, sugarcane and sweets.
- Read the Tulsi Vivah katha and perform the marriage rites, with the traditional mangalashtak and aarti.
- Distribute prasad to the family.
Your city
Tithi start and end times are the same across India, but sunrise and sunset are not, so the Hari Vasara end and the evening Tulsi Vivah time shift with your location. Check your city on the Churki Panchang.
