The Diwali week: 6 to 10 November
The five-day Diwali festival is spread across six calendar dates in 2026 because Naraka Chaturdashi and Diwali fall on the same day. Dhanteras is on Friday, 6 November, when Trayodashi (10:30 AM to the next morning) covers the evening Pradosh Kaal, about 5:32 PM to 7:56 PM in New Delhi. Choti Diwali with the early-morning oil bath is on Sunday, 8 November. Lakshmi Puja is the same evening, because Amavasya runs from 11:28 AM on 8 November to 12:31 PM on 9 November and covers the evening Pradosh of 8 November only (about 5:31 PM to 7:55 PM). Govardhan Puja follows on Tuesday, 10 November.

Bhai Dooj: why calendars differ
Dwitiya tithi runs from 2:00 PM on 10 November to 3:53 PM on 11 November. Bhai Dooj is performed in the afternoon, so some calendars give 10 November and many give 11 November, when Dwitiya covers the full afternoon. Both views exist, so ask your family pandit which your household follows.
Chhath Puja 2026 (13 to 16 November)
Chhath is a four-day festival for Surya and Chhathi Maiya, observed mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Nepal. Shashthi tithi runs from 11:24 PM on 14 November to 2:01 AM on 16 November, so the Sandhya Arghya (evening offering to the setting Sun) is on Sunday, 15 November, at sunset, about 5:27 PM in New Delhi. The Usha Arghya (offering to the rising Sun) is on Monday, 16 November, about 6:44 AM. Nahay-Khay is on 13 November and Kharna on 14 November. Sunrise and sunset change by city, so use your own local times for the arghya. Full timings are in the Chhath Puja 2026 guide.
Dev Uthani Ekadashi, Tulsi Vivah and Dev Diwali
Dev Uthani Ekadashi (Prabodhini Ekadashi), when Vishnu is said to wake from his four-month sleep, is on Friday, 20 November; the tithi runs from 7:16 AM that day to 6:31 AM on 21 November, so the fast is broken (parana) on 21 November, after Hari Vasara ends at about 12:07 PM. See the Dev Uthani Ekadashi and Tulsi Vivah guide. Tulsi Vivah, the ceremonial marriage of Tulsi and Vishnu (Shaligram), is on Saturday, 21 November in the evening, when Dwadashi is running. Auspicious wedding season is traditionally said to open after this. Kartik Purnima, also called Dev Diwali, is on Tuesday, 24 November; Purnima runs from 11:42 PM on 23 November to 8:23 PM on 24 November, so it covers the evening lamp-lighting. See the Kartik Purnima and Dev Diwali guide.
How these dates were worked out
Each festival has a rule for which moment of the day the tithi (lunar day) must be present: sunrise, afternoon (Aparahna), evening (Pradosh), midnight (Nishita) or moonrise. We calculate the Sun and Moon positions with the Lahiri ayanamsha, find when each tithi starts and ends, and apply the festival's rule for New Delhi. The lunar month is identified at the exact moment of observance, which keeps Diwali in Kartik even in years with an extra (Adhika) month. Tithi start and end times are the same across India; sunrise, sunset and moonrise are not, so for another city open the Churki Panchang.
What to do before each festival
- Check your own city's sunset before fixing the Pradosh puja time for Dhanteras and Diwali.
- For Chhath, confirm the arghya times with your local ghat or committee.
- For Ekadashi fasts, note both the fast day and the parana time after sunrise the next day.
- Where two calendars disagree, follow your family pandit's tradition.
